JAMES WAS PRETTY SAVVY with chopsticks. He picked up the roll and popped it into his mouth, chewed and swallowed. As he sat shoulder-to-shoulder with Brad, opposite them were two of Brad’s friends.

“So what'd you think? We could go to the frat house this weekend.”

“I don't know, I'd have to think about it,” Brad said. “I might have other plans.”

“Yeah, like what, dude? Is there someone you're not telling us about?”

James looked at Brad, his heart raced in panic, yet he knew their secret was safe.

“It's nothing like that, I just have coursework to catch up on.”

“You really believe that bullshit, Sean?” The jock turned to the other guy in the room.

“Nah, the rumor around campus is that you're back with Stacey.”

Brad folded his arms. “Really, is that what they're saying now?”

“Yup.”

“Well, it's not true,” Brad said. “You can just kill that story.”

“Okay, prove it. Twenty bucks you can come out and get with one of her friends.”

Brad shook his head. “Twenty bucks? Hell no. That's not worth the hassle.”

Although James felt a prick of jealousy, he was glad they weren't poking fun at him being gay. He got up and switched on his video game, leaving the guys to their discussion. He faced the TV and sat with his back towards them, which was preferable at this point.

“Hey, what'd you think, little dude?” one of the jocks called him from behind him. “You in on this?”

James cringed at hearing the moniker. “I don't really care,” he said, turning slightly.

“How about you keep track of the bets?” the guy said.

“Keep him out of this,” Brad said, defensively.

“Come on, man, why are you always so sensitive around him? It's not like he's your boyfriend.” Snickers followed this comment.

James’ insides went on full clench. People finding out they were a couple was not the kind of attention he wanted.

“What if he is?” Brad said. There was a pause.

Quickly, James angled around to face them. “I can put all of the bets in my phone.”

“Good, idea. We can't let this shit get lost.” The jock said.

“I don't need to be kissing a girl right now. After Stacey’s bullshit, I need a time out.”

“What you need to do is get laid, and we’re not talking about the secret thing he’s got going on with Stacey.”

“Maybe you should do it, I mean it's just a kiss, right?” James said.

“Right, the little guy has the right idea. It'll teach Stacey's cheating ass a lesson.”

The two jocks put their money in and agreed to get a few more guys in on the bet before they left the dorm.

When the guys left, James switched off the video game and sat on the opposite end of bed from Brad. His eyes bounced back between Brad’s sculpted biceps and the food that sat in his own lap. They ate in silence. James lifted another roll, bit into it and chewed it. He could no longer taste it, but continued to eat, just to keep his mind distracted from what had just occurred.
